With the other mixes I’ve done for AudioStream and InnerFidelity having run the range of musical genres, there is of course a contingent of readers who have an aversion to electronic music. I felt inclined to offer something of a course correction for the classic audiophiles who proudly hold their ground.

I freely admit that I have rarely loved a digital album as much as the analog ones I would take an hour-long bus ride to find and then spend all of my money on to buy. As deeply as I lament this romantic lure, this selective purity shouldn’t nullify the value of having access to an infinite amount of music with a minimal amount of effort.

Summing up a decade of music while you’re still in it can be a tricky proposition. Like looking at a large, intricate painting with your eyes just inches from the canvas.

It would be difficult to exaggerate Angelo Badalamenti’s contribution to David Lynch’s body of work. Unlike other director/ composer teams like Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herman or Stephen Spielberg and John Williams, where the music was written to existing film, this collaboration began when the stories were still part of Lynch’s meditations.

Where my Winter Mix was an obscure selection intended to be enjoyed in isolation while shrouded in headphones and framed by frosted windows, the spring season finds me emerging from my musical shell with a more social selection – fresh like newly grown flowers or a pair of recently purchased sneakers.

Rather than produce a definitive list, my presentation of the best music of the year is more cohesive than it is comprehensive. This selection of indie, hip hop, experimental and dance music provides a general sense of what I consider to be the most notable highlights from an arguably unremarkable but nonetheless enjoyable year in music.
