The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest is unlike any other show I habitually travel to in North America.

Who hates social media? Answering emails constantly? Web-surfing rabbit holes? Let’s be real, computers are both ruining/creating the world, but the ‘being there’ of life experience seems to be waning. Are they necessary? Yes, the 21st-century world is as deeply intertwined with silicon as it is carbon, but to be honest, and largely unbeknownst to the general audiophile populace, your PC is probably diminishing your audio experience far more than you realize.

Ayre Acoustics was showing off some of the newest kit in their lineup at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and the piece of gear that interested me the most was their new EX-8 integrated 'super' amplifier. From their latest 8 Series.

We’ve all lost something that we swore was just there ”a second ago.” You know what I’m talking about, you put down your phone, or a book, a CD or tape… you turn around to take your coat off or just to sit down and poof it’s gone. Vanished into thin air.

Listening to streamers/servers I’ve heard over the last couple of years has been interesting, because at hi-fi shows it’s pretty much impossible to tell what one is bringing on its own to the mix, but in the context of one’s own system it can be a startling lesson in the importance of how those bits are being delivered to your DAC.

Some rooms at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest are jammed packed all the time, making demo sessions a pain as trying to really get a sense of what a system is doing can be difficult with 20 hot, sweaty bodies and all their whispering, muttering and jostling which can easily bump the room’s noise floor by 20dB.

Wood, polished alloy, rich-hued dark grey and burnt-orange paint, glowing tubes and the exquisite sound of pure timbre and tone reeled me in from the hall like I was a fish on a line that had taken the bait.

Walking into a room curated by Wynn Wong of Wynn Audio in Toronto, Canada is always an experience I look forward to because he takes such exquisite care in holistically putting together his sound systems for shows.
