T.H.E. Show Los Angeles 2019

Every time I head to Los Angeles I can’t help but think of the opening sequence to seminal science-fiction film Blade Runner.

As a dyed-n-the-wool sci-fi geek, the bleak, post-apocalyptic, rain-soaked landscape of black, grey and neon that dominates the movie is forever etched into my mind’s eye.

Ridley Scott’s epic 1982 neo-noir thriller starring Harrison Ford is based on the 1968 Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and is probably the benchmark for all sci-fi movies to come since, but there are a couple things to take stock of. First of all, Dick set his book in San Francisco, not L.A. (and of note, he wrote Androids while living through a dreary Vancouver winter, hence the constant rain imagery), and secondly, the Los Angeles of 2019 today is nothing like the Los Angeles of 2019 depicted in Blade Runner.

That’s good for me as I already hail from a temperate rainforest climate and I prefer that Los Angeles is still the hot, sun-soaked, beautiful-people mecca it’s been for decades, which brings us to the point of traveling to L.A. – it’s almost time for T.H.E. Show at the Hilton Long Beach (Friday, June 7: Noon – 7 p.m., Saturday, June 8: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 9: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and you can pre-purchase tickets through T.H.E. Show website HERE.

This year The Home Entertainment Show promises 62 listening rooms and 200 companies for eager audiophiles in the Southern California region to take in.

I’ve been to a lot of high-fidelity trade shows over the years, but I’ll always have a soft spot for T.H.E. Show because A) It was the first hi-fi event in the United States I ever attended and covered for an audiophile magazine, and B) I had such a total blast doing it, and met so many wonderful people that weekend that I continue to call good friends to this day.

This year looks to be as promising as previous iterations with not only a ton of the latest and greatest in high-end audio, but several cool events for show goers to take part in as well.

2019 will see the world premiere of T.H.E. Human Side, a documentary short which premiers on Friday evening (June 7th) and T.H.E. Concert which features four artists all connected with T.H.E. Show which will be recorded live to reel-to-reel tape, then to be directed to the cutter head and pressed to vinyl. And then there’s T.H.E. Golden Ears Panel on Saturday, June 8 at 4 p.m. featuring three Grammy Award winning, multiplatinum-selling record producers who will be discussing music creation and production all the way through to the high end audio listener’s experience.

Please check back throughout the coming week and weekend as I cover the event with Stereophile legend Jason Victor Serinus.

Looking forward to your coverage.

Are you going to go to the California Audio Show in July?
