Naim Audio adds Qobuz Support – UPDATED

The Qobuz update is now available via the Naim Control App for Uniti Atom, Star and Nova systems, ND5 XS2, NDX 2 and ND 555 network players. Qobuz support for Naim Mu-so 2nd Generation and Naim Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation wireless speakers will follow shortly.

The audiophile focus of French high-resolution music-streaming service Qobuz continues to gain momentum as more and more partnerships with high-fidelity manufacturers are announced.

What was once viewed by serious digital-audio music lovers as a CD-quality Internet landscape dominated by TIDAL, has in recent months, seen Qobuz leading a charge of sorts in the name of quality music first – dropping mp3 files entirely – and that seems to be resonating with not only consumers, but the companies those consumers support.

British hi-fi stalwart Naim Audio announced today that it will soon be releasing a free over-the-air firmware upgrade allowing native streaming from within the Naim control app of Qobuz files up to 24-bit/192kHz. “The Naim/Qobuz update [is] scheduled to be released next week for owners of Uniti Atom, Star and Nova systems, plus ND5 XS2, NDX 2 and ND 555 network players.” The company added that an update for Naim Mu-so 2nd Generation and Naim Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation wireless speakers will follow in Spring 2020 (in the meantime, owners of the speakers can enjoy Qobuz in up to 24bit/96kHz quality via Chromecast).

According to the company, those Naim owners who haven’t yet experienced Qobuz now can via, “30-day free trials which will be available via a link in the Naim control app, now available for iOS and Android devices.”

With TIDAL connected to MQA for its high-resolution tier of offerings, and Amazon giving subscribers ‘Ultra-HD’ (24-bit/192Khz) streaming catalogs, I don’t see a downside to this competition at the moment, other than more and more music, albeit dematerialized, being made available to consumers.

From the press release:

“With our mutual dedication to offering the very best-quality, most authentic musical experience, a closer partnership with Qobuz was an obvious way to extend the music-streaming options for Naim users. We’re excited about rolling out this update this month” says Charlie Henderson, Naim Managing Director.

“Naim is one of the most respected hi-fi manufacturers globally, Qobuz is very proud to collaborate with such a prestigious partner. This much wanted new Hi-Res music streaming experience will delight music lovers over the world” says Benoît Rébus, Qobuz Head of Global Partnerships.
