AXPONA 2019: Something Wicked This Way Comes

I still remember the first time I saw it… appearing suddenly like a massive concrete spectre through the rain, sleet and fog of suburban Chicago through the Ubër car window: The Renaissance Schaumberg Hotel & Convention Centre.

This was last April and the first time for Audio Expo North America at these new digs. A move that proved to be wise for everyone involved. AXPONA at the Renaissance Schaumberg was easier to navigate for press and show goers, had far more room for exhibitors (more than 400 this year), and has better facilities, restaurants and meeting places than the show’s previous home.

One of the things I love about the Renaissance is the tower layout (where the bulk of the more than 190 listening rooms are located) because it flows so well from the top-floor down. Trade show pro tip: Take the elevator to the top floor of exhibitors, choose a direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) and proceed to spiral down from floor to floor via staircases until you’re ready for lunch and head to the lobby. Eat, relax, regroup and repeat. It avoids the elevators and their inherent delays as many people eschew the stairwells to explore shows one painful floor stop at time.

Heralded as the “largest audio expo in North America,” AXPONA now even has its own mobile app featuring an event schedule, show maps and the ability to search exhibitors. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the show for one day, $40/$50 for two days and $50/$75 for three days, so grabbing them ahead of time will save you enough money for a nice lunch while you’re there. Student passes are $10. The show runs Friday April 12th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday April 13th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday April 14th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
