AudioQuest Launches Niagara 1200 to Replace 1000

”Bring the Noise.”

Defiant lyrics, a song title – by rap progenitors Public Enemy off their 1988 album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back – and a clarion call to owners of current AudioQuest AC power conditioners like the Niagara series of noise-dissipation devices to banish AC hash inherent to the power grids we all use to run our hi-fi gear.

The company’s newest member of the Niagara line (1000, 5000 and 7000) – the Niagara 1200 at $999 USD, and available now – adds a second high-current outlet, and replaces the 1000 with a new more compact chassis enclosure that offers owners multiple placement options.

As someone who has spent a number of years listening to the variables in sound quality that different approaches to dealing with corrupt AC power can offer, I can say without hyperbole that companies like AudioQuest and PS Audio have made huge strides in lowering the noise floor for delicate high-fidelity components – especially digitally-based systems that have no inherent ‘surface-noise floor’ because there is no electro-acoustic/mechanical translation taking place like there is in analog front ends – that rely on clean power to perform to their maximum potential.

I currently have an AudioQuest Niagara 5000 and several AC cables from their Storm Series in for review and can say with confidence that the benefits from using products like these are not subtle and should be experienced at a local dealer by anyone who is curious about performance claims made my manufacturers of power conditioning products.

Those familiar with the critically acclaimed Niagara Series, designed by Garth Powell, AudioQuest’s Senior Director of Engineering, will recognize many of the 1200’s technologies and materials. Like its larger siblings, the Niagara 1200 uses capacitor-forming technologies that vastly improve linearity and minimize distortion, ultra-low resistance solid-core wiring optimized for low-noise directionality, and low-impedance AC inlet and outlet contacts with thick Hanging-Silver plating over high-grip Beryllium-Copper for superior current transfer and effective noise dissipation.

Like the 1000 before it, the Niagara 1200 includes AudioQuest’s patented Ground-Noise Dissipation System for a full 18 octaves of Level-X Linear Noise-Dissipation. Common to all Niagara products, the 1200 features AudioQuest’s Non-Sacrificial Surge Protection and Over-Voltage Shutdown, ensuring that all associated A/V systems are thoroughly protected from AC surges and spikes.

The new 1200 offers placement options not available in the 1000.

Unlike the Niagara 1000, the more versatile and user-friendly Niagara 1200 can be placed horizontally on a shelf, vertically on one end, or face down with its outlets pointed upward for easy access. Perhaps most significantly, thanks to the Niagara 1200’s second high-current outlet specifically optimized for amplification devices, owners of powered speakers, monoblocks, or powered subwoofers can now enjoy the full benefits of uncompressed power previously available to only a single component with the Niagara 1000.

Note: The Niagara 1200 does not ship with an AC power cable. Products with input current capacity of 15A RMS require power cables no smaller than 14AWG. To take full advantage of the Niagara’s Noise-Dissipation circuit, AudioQuest recommends partnering the unit with a power cable that has been properly controlled for low-noise directionality. AudioQuest’s NRG-Z and up are highly recommended.

Niagara 1200 Features

  • Ground-Noise Dissipation System: AQ’s patented technology vastly reduces ground-borne noise without compromising safety or creating low-level ground loops.
  • Level-X Linear Noise-Dissipation Technology ensures the most consistent and widest bandwidth noise dissipation possible, without the inconsistent multi-node resonant peaking typically found in most AC power conditioners.
  • Low-Z (Low-Impedance) AC Power Input and Outputs: These receptacles not only feature superior grip and lower resistance thanks to beryllium copper, they also include thick Hanging-Silver plating to ensure the lowest impedance at radio frequencies, enabling superior noise dissipation.
  • Non-Sacrificial Surge Suppression will accept multiple transient power surges and spikes up to 6000V or 3000A (the maximum that can make it through a home or office electrical panel). Damage from electrical storms or power-line interruptions is virtually impossible. Set it and forget it.
  • Over-Voltage Shutdown: >140VAC (will activate the main high-current relay to open within less than 0.25 second; automatically resets once the incoming power is within a safe range).
  • Level-X Linear Transverse-Mode Filter: In excess of 24dB from 20kHz to 1GHz, linearized for dynamic (rising) line impedance with frequency (source) and 10- to 50-ohm load, system current dependent.
