Let’s be real, having to choose a product that qualifies itself as one that breaks through the noise of everything that 2018 saw in new products for audiophiles for all the myriad reasons that allows a product to set itself apart from all others is no easy job to take on.

Running up that hill to discuss the more upper-echelon of hi-fi products, one finds the air more rarified, much like mountain climbing, the higher one goes the better the views become but usually with a cost. In climbing it's danger to life and limb, in hi-fi it's danger to the pocketbook and also one of hearing what you might have been missing.

For those with more jingle than jangle in their pockets, this Editor's Choice list focuses on those components which I felt made a real impact on my listening experiences this year, but were priced in the $500 to $2,500 USD bracket.

If there's one question that seems to come up over and over, it's "Which DAC did you like better?" While I can understand the interest, I think it’s more important that a review convey the sound of a given component and leave personal preferences out of it, as much as that's possible. If we want to interject the personal, just make sure it's explicit and no harm done. The harm comes from trying to boil a review down to whether the reviewer 'liked' a given component or not because that is ultimately not the point. The ultimate point is whether or not you will like it.
