Rather than produce a definitive list, my presentation of the best music of the year is more cohesive than it is comprehensive. This selection of indie, hip hop, experimental and dance music provides a general sense of what I consider to be the most notable highlights from an arguably unremarkable but nonetheless enjoyable year in music.

The AudioStream gear-reviewer team teams up to share their favorite new music (and more) from 2017 (it was a very good year). Enjoy!

What a year. We again have so many remarkable artists putting out such astounding work. There’s nothing that gives me more pleasure than sharing excellent tunes and man is there a lot to account for in 2017. As regular readers might know, I do not follow a strict policy of reviewing albums only of the moment. There is so much great music being published on a yearly basis that it’s hard to keep up with it and there is nothing more thrilling than discovering some real gem that you missed from a few years back because no one except a few obscure sites reviewed it so some are not from 2017. Way more than half come from 2017 releases. Those albums getting longer reviews are ones I have not already covered in the monthly column.

Usually, I find comfort in limitations and I'm pretty good at following instructions. But, when it comes to year-end lists, I'm just not myself. So, when Michael Lavorgna asked for a list of five favorite albums, I promptly came up with 75.

Three left me wanting. Three left me wanting to share more from this beautifully bountiful year of music. As my good friend advised, "Do it." So I did. It.

Our reviewing team (I really enjoy typing that), Steve Plaskin, Ola Björling, John Darko, Jana Dagdagan, Alex Halberstadt, and moi, Pick 3 from 2016. Enjoy!

[Please join me in welcoming Joe Surdna, our new contributor on all things music. Ed.]

December is my favorite month for discovering great new music, mainly because so many Best of 2016 lists are published. I discover dozens of overlooked and previously unknown albums, and for me that is the real point of publishing lists like this; not to create a hierarchical ranking, but as a way of sharing great music that you might not have heard and will come to cherish and be inspired by in the months and years to come.

As you probably know, I post a Download Of The Week every Friday. What you may not know is this is one of my favorite features on AudioStream because it's the reason we're here—music. I always enjoy reading other "Best of..." music lists so I thought I'd put one together. Here we have nearly all of 2015's DotW picks in one easy container. I've left out older recordings, I did cheat a few times, so what we're looking at and listening to are (mainly) my top picks for new music in 2015. Enjoy!
